Layering for cooler weather – How to stay stylish

Autumn is officially here and there is a most definite chill in the air. So as we pack away our sandals and strappy tops, most of us find ourselves in the dilemma of looking stylish and still keeping warm. Autumn days can be notoriously difficult to get dressed for – you never know really what weather you’re in for. So our advice is layer, layer, layer!

The trick however when layering is to avoid looking like the Michelin Man, and wearing pieces that will look just as good on their own, as when layered. Planning your outfit using Stylishly is one great way to make sure all your layers work, and we also have a few golden rules to follow when piling on the pieces…

The very first rule of layering is to always wear thicker layers over thinner. This gives you a streamlined silhouette no matter how many layers your pile on.

When layering, don’t be afraid to mix prints- in fact we encourage it! The mixture of different prints helps to define the layers and gives you an effortlessly chic look.

A gilet is a must have for layering from autumn through to winter. Great on its own we also love it layered over a fitted jacket, like a leather one. The best part is that even when the temperatures change throughout the day you can still wear one, every option giving you a different look.

When layering, remember to play with proportion and see what works for your body shape. For the most flattering look, no matter your body type, avoid any of your items in your outfit ending at the same length!

Lastly, don’t forget about your skirts when layering into the cooler months. The length of the skirt adds another dimension to your layering that can be even more flattering than sticking to your denims.
